Sinharaja Forest Reserve is considered as the heart of the biodiversity of Sri Lanka. It is the only wet zone, lowland forest in Sri Lanka. It (36,474.93ha) spans over 06 Divisional Secretaries Divisions of Ratnapura, Galle, Matara and Kalutara Districts.

It was designated as a World Biosphere Reserve by the International Biosphere Reserve Network of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1978. It was declared as a National Heritage Site in 1988 by National Heritage Wilderness Act. This Reserve has gained international recognition and has designated as a World Heritage Site in 1988. This was the first ever natural resource that gained such an international recognition in Sri Lanka.

There are 155km from Colombo to the Sinharaja and it takes about 03 hours and 30 minutes.

Climate

Sinharaja Reserved Forest is nourished by the Southwest Monsoon Rain that distributes throughout the year.

Biodiversity – We can see all characters expected from a wet zone forest system. This forest reserve is considered as a Biodiversity Hotspot. Following enchanting waterfalls can be seen when enter from Lankagama Entrance.

Accommodation facilities

• Pitadeniya forest lodge – There are 02 rooms. Altogether 12 persons can accommodate here at the same time. From Matara via Deniyaya, Pallegama junction to Mederapitiya and from there can reach here from Sinharaja entrance.

• Wanigasekera lodge - There are 02 rooms. Altogether 30 persons can accommodate here at the same time. From Matara via Deniyaya, Pallegama Junction, Mederipitiya and from there can reach here from Sinharaja entrance.

• Ginganga foret lodge - There are 02 rooms. Altogether 05 persons can accommodate here at the same time. From Matara via Deniyaya, Pallegama Junction, Mederipitiya and from there can reach here from Sinharaja entrance.
